Cheats & Glitches

How could we not cover Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis? MK on Genesis was actual the first port I got to play. Its no secret I have been a Nintendo guy most of my life, until the later years. Mortal Kombat marked the beginning of an iconic fighting game franchise that would shape the gaming industry for years to come. Developed by Midway Games and released in 1993, it quickly became a talking point at my school due to its blood, intense gameplay. Obviously another port from the Arcades that jump into the console world.
Set in a mystical martial arts tournament known as Mortal Kombat, the game features a diverse roster of fighters, each with their unique fighting style and special moves. Players assume the roles of these fighters, battling against opponents from different realms, aiming to become the champion and thwart the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung and his malevolent master, Shao Kahn.
What is the blood code for Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis?
A huge talking point during the 90s was the violence in games add to that the gore that Mortal Kombat had on offer. Games were getting ratings for the first real time since video games had launched. Sega being the black sheep had no problem pushing the boundaries.
One of the defining features of Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis was its use of exaggerated gore and violence, which sparked a nationwide debate on video game content and led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).
However, due to concerns over the game’s graphic content, a blood code was introduced to tone down the violence for younger players or those who preferred a less gory experience. By entering the cheat code A, B, A, C, A, B, B, players could activate the “Bloodless Kombat” mode, replacing the bloody fatalities and brutalities with sweat, thus reducing the level of graphic violence.
The blood code provided a compromise between the desire for a less intense gaming experience and the appeal of playing Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis without completely removing the game’s edgy nature.
Mortal Kombat Cheats & Secrets
Like many classic video games, Mortal Kombat 1 on Sega Genesis is filled with hidden secrets and to be honest I hated playing Tournament mode. I got stuck on Shang Tsung so many times I almost broke my friend Adrians controller. These cheats provide us additional lives, unlock special characters, and unleash unique abilities, which gave the game more playtime for us. Here are some notable Mortal Kombat cheats:
Reptile Battle: The elusive character Reptile can be challenged and defeated by meeting specific conditions. In a one-player game, the player must achieve a Double Flawless Victory without using any Continue Continues and perform a Fatality on the match’s second stage. Upon meeting these criteria, Reptile will appear as a secret opponent, testing the player’s skills in a fierce battle.
Goro and Shang Tsung: Unlock the two formidable bosses Goro and Shang Tsung by entering the cheat code A, B, A, C, A, B, B, A, C, A, B, A, C, A, B, B at the start screen. This code grants access to the mighty four-armed Shokan warrior Goro and the cunning sorcerer Shang Tsung, providing a fresh challenge for skilled players.
EJB Menu: Enter the cheat code E, J, B, A, C, C at the start screen to access the EJB Menu, where players can toggle various in-game features, such as character bios, voice tests, and ending sequences.
Play as Smoke: With the cheat code C, C, B, B, A, A, A, A, B, B, C, C, A, B, B, A at the start screen, players can transform Sub-Zero into the gray-clad ninja Smoke, unlocking a hidden character.

Game Bugs & Glitches
I have never been so annoyed at a glitch in video games as Raidens infinite torpedo glitch. Mortal Kombat includes some of the usual glitches and bugs as youd expect character animation issues, hitbox inconsistencies, and unintended collision detection problems.
The Arcade had Sub Zeros double ice breaker glitch, Johnny Cages head removal fatality where the heads still attached. Invisible glitches where CPU players would disappear during a fight Goro being the main glitch cause. I mean just funny glitches.
But Raiden. If you find yourself against a player who knows how to get this glitch to work. Its one of the most annoying combos and frustrating things to trying and block.
Throughout the series, various patches and updates have been released to address these bugs and glitches, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable gameplay experience.
Interestingly, some of these bugs and glitches have gained a cult following among the Mortal Kombat community, with players actively seeking to recreate these rare occurrences and even incorporating them into their gameplay strategies. Lui Kang and the untouchable block combo is always fun! Overall just watch out if you play anyone as Raiden. Damn glitch.
