Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega’s blue blur hit the scene in the early ’90s, and for many, Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis was a pivotal moment in gaming history. I knew a few kids  who owned the Genesis on launch and played a few games – Sonic was their Mario. This game wasn’t just about beating Dr. Robotnik; it was about the thrill of the speed, the joy of exploration, and of course, collecting those all-important rings.

Sonic’s debut marked Sega’s bold entry into the mascot arena, and boy, did it leave an impact! It felt like Sonic replaced Alex The Kidd from the Sega Master System and to be fair – Sonic was so much better.

Sonic Story & Levels

So from what I know Sonic was born around 1989. All starting with a draft sketched out by a guy called Naoto Ōshima. Little did we know, this draft was the starting line for what would become the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s fascinating, really, how ideas evolve over time.

Now, let’s talk about Yuji Naka, the genius behind the scenes and so many of Sega’s big hits. He took this concept of a character zipping through loops and brought it to life with some serious coding wizardry. Imagine trying to make a sprite move smoothly along a curve—sounds complicated, right? Well, Yuji Naka, being the genius he is, figured it out using an algorithm and a dot matrix to pinpoint the sprite’s exact location. It’s like he translated the language of speed and loops into something the game could understand and perform flawlessly.

And there you have it, a bit of a geek-out moment on the brilliant minds behind Sonic. It’s incredible how a simple draft and some complex coding could lead to so many hours of gaming bliss. Ah, the power of creativity and technology!

The levels and their design took a much deeper approach. While the level design was at times puzzling at speed they were simple at their core. Here’s a quick rundown:

  1. Green Hill Zone
  2. Marble Zone
  3. Spring Yard Zone
  4. Labyrinth Zone
  5. Star Light Zone
  6. Scrap Brain Zone
  7. Final Zone (Boss)

And let’s not forget about the Special Stages for collecting Chaos Emeralds. In all honesty playing Sonic The Hedgehog in my forties, is easy to just put it in, zone out (no pun intended), and relax.

Sonic The Hedgehog Cheats

Having really just jumped into Sega in the past few years I was suprised about the amount of cheats they put in their games. Coming from Nintendo and a SMB series that lacked any cheats. It was refresh. So here they are and few things to play around with – watch out with the Debug mode as its more glitch city than making the game fun in anyway.

A Tripped Out Demo

Hold A + B + C while the demo is playing and watch as Sonic gets a bit lost in his own world.

Control Mode

Navigate to the title screen and input Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right. Now, pausing the game during play allows you to restart with A, enter slow motion with B, and advance frame by frame with C.

Level Select

At the title screen, while holding A, input Up, Down, Left, Right, followed by a Start press when you hear a chime. If you’re having trouble, try this variation: Up, Down, Left, Right at the title screen, then hold A and press Start. Once activated, starting a new game with Start + A held down brings up the level select.

Extra Lives

In Green Hill Zone – Act 3, a life is hidden at the bottom. Grab it, collect rings until you hit 100 for another life, then take the 1-Up from the top of the loop-de-loop and intentionally lose a life. Rinse and repeat for as many lives as you want.

Debug Mode

First, enable Control Mode. Then, start your game but hold A until Sonic appears. You should see hexadecimal numbers at the top if done correctly. Enter Debug Mode by pressing B. Here, A cycles through sprites, C places them, and B turns Debug Mode on and off. Note the available sprites vary by zone, and the timer is replaced by a sprite counter.

Glitches & Bugs: Sonic Had His Issues

Placing those game sprites everywhere from the debug mode we listed earlier is more than a big enough glitch for me.

But there was plenty of painful bugs I’ve encountered. Most of the time its that damn Buzz Bomber or wasp as I call the friggin thing. I’ve on multiple occasions completely missed the hit box of the Buzz Bomber but been spun into a ring spitting mess. Explain it to me?

Ring post bugs are also annoying. Collecting the hidden ring posts give you what should be 100 or 1000 additional points but on occassion I’ve been hit with a 10 point bonus – WTF pay me my rings!

Then there are less painful ones like graphical issues with the lives counter maxing out at 2 digits, three is just a mess of code. There are walls that drop you down if you hold down on the controller which ultimately kills you. I’m pretty sure there are more as well. Sega is full of glitches and bugs lol – Still a Nintendo guy at heart.
