If you were a gamer in the late 90s and early 2000s, you may have fond memories of playing “Syphon Filter” on the PlayStation 1. This action-packed third-person shooter game, developed by Eidetic and released by 989 Studios in 1999, was a hit among gamers and critics alike. One of the reasons for its success was its challenging gameplay, which required players to think strategically and make split-second decisions. If you’re looking to relive those memories, or if you’re a new player looking to experience this classic game, this article will provide you with some valuable tips and tricks to help you navigate the game’s tricky levels.

Syphon Filter Story

Releasing in the later part of the 90s Syphon Filter was one of the first real third person shooter terrorist style game of its kind. The game’s story revolves around the main character, Gabriel Logan, a highly trained agent who works for the United States government’s secret agency, the Agency.

The aim of the game is to stop a terrorist organization called the Black Baton from using a deadly virus called the Syphon Filter. I’ve always loved the name and the way the story plays out is and was movie worthy for its time.

The virus was originally developed by the Agency as a biological weapon, but it was stolen by the Black Baton, who plan to use it to attack major cities around the world.

The game begins with you taking on the role of Gabriel Logan, who is tasked with tracking down the Black Baton and stopping their plan to unleash the Syphon Filter virus. Along the way, he is joined by his partner Lian Xing, who is also a highly skilled agent.

The story begins with a prologue mission where Gabriel and Lian are sent to a secret Agency facility to retrieve information about a missing scientist, Dr. Elsa Weissinger, who was working on the Syphon Filter project.

As the story unfolds, Gabriel and Lian travel around the world to stop the Black Baton from using the virus. They encounter a number of obstacles along the way, including rogue Agency agents, corrupt government officials, and heavily armed terrorists.

The game’s story is filled with twists and turns, and you must use their skills and wits to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. As the game progresses, you start to  uncover more information about the Black Baton’s plan and the Agency’s involvement in the development of the Syphon Filter virus.

The game was so far ahead of its time with plot that the series spanned six games across the Playstation universe. But it at the time of release this game was hard and many still have it as the best game from the series. We have a few cheats that might help things out below!

Syphon Filter Cheats & Secrets

Before we dive into the gameplay tips, let’s talk about cheats. While using cheats may take away some of the challenge and satisfaction of completing the game, they can be a fun way to mix things up and experiment with different aspects of the game. Here are some cheats you can use in “Syphon Filter” on the PlayStation 1:

  • All Weapons: To unlock all weapons in the game, enter the code L1, R1, L2, R2, Square, Circle, Triangle, X, Select at the main menu. You’ll hear a sound to confirm that the cheat was successful.
  • Infinite Health: If you’re tired of dying and having to start over, you can use the infinite health cheat. Enter the code Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Circle, X, Select at the main menu. Again, you’ll hear a sound to confirm that the cheat was successful.
  • Level Select: If you want to skip ahead to a specific level, you can use the level select cheat. Enter the code Circle, Circle, Circle, Circle, Square, Square, Square, Square, X, X, X, X, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Select at the main menu. This will bring up a level select screen where you can choose which level you want to play.

If you blow through the game with the cheats on. Increase the difficulty take em off and try a zero damage run. Good Luck!

Syphon Filter Game Bugs & Glitches

Let me start by saying. Great game. It was a great game and still is today, But! It had its bugs and being on a cd based console with no updates or patches there was plenty of bugs that plagued the game.

Missing dialogue: This one was almost like they just dropped the ball in production not sure how… But in some instances, the dialogue between characters may not appear or may be missing entirely. Making things confusing at times.

Weapon glitch: This had me restart from a save game two or three times. The glitch  can cause weapons to disappear or become unusable. Driving you insane especially during combat situations. Make sure to save!

Inconsistent hit detection: I havent had this one personally but Kali from our team mentioned that the hit detection in the game can be inconsistent, making it difficult to aim accurately and hit targets. (Get good Kali) lol.

Collision detection issues: There are instances where players can get stuck on objects or walls due to collision detection issues, making it difficult to move around and complete objectives.

Sound issues: Like many of Sony’s first playtstation games there were a few sound issues, such as sound effects not playing or being delayed. Eh CD. It happens.

Graphical glitches: The game’s graphics can sometimes glitch, causing objects to appear distorted or disappear altogether. There is a polygon glitch at start of loading screen which makes the game almost unplayable forcing a reset. This is caused on a certain time to start a new game the game mistimes a render causing a mess if graphical issues.
