RG353P Handheld
The Retro Gamer’s Dream

Anbernic RG353P

If you’re a retro gaming enthusiast, the Anbernic RG353P Handheld console is a device that deserves your attention. Packed with nostalgia and designed to bring back the golden age of gaming, this portable console offers a wide range of features and a vast library of games to satisfy your gaming cravings. In this article, we will explore what sets the RG353P apart from other handheld consoles, its compatibility with different platforms, and whether it can fulfill your gaming desires, including the ability to play Sega Dreamcast games.

Retro Gamers Dream

I’d seen this thing floating around in its concept form. The look of that Super Nintendo controller was a home run for me, as the SNES was my favourite console of all time which is no surprise being a gamer from the late 80s. I think i speak for everyone (unless you were a Sega fan) The Super Nintendo was amazing.

The first thing that strikes you about the Anbernic RG353P is its sleek and compact design, yes just like that SNES controller. Crafted with a focus on portability, the handheld console fits comfortably in your hands, allowing for long gaming sessions without any discomfort. Its build quality is impressive, there are a few downsides but overall its a sturdy construction that ensures durability even during intense gaming sessions.

The RG353P features a vibrant 3.5-inch IPS display that showcases games with sharp visuals and vivid colors. The screen’s size strikes a perfect balance, offering a clear view of the gameplay while maintaining the device’s overall compactness. Whether you’re playing retro platformers or engaging in intense RPG battles, the display does justice to the pixel art and graphical details of the games.

RG353P Build Quality

Just like most of Anbernics range of handhelds the build quality of the Anbernic RG353P Handheld console is remarkable, its hard to believe that three years ago playing Dreamcast on a handheld was a pipe dream. The console features well-designed buttons that are responsive and provide excellent tactile feedback. The placement of the buttons is ergonomic, allowing for comfortable and precise gameplay more so than the vertical versions.

Now here’s the catch, the directional pad (D-pad) is good but its no SNES, it has smooth movement and accurate input detection, making it ideal for platformers and fighting games. But and it has a tendancy to be sticky which can cause missed or additional inputs. One of the best entry level D-Pads I’ve used but its still not that Nintendo quality and may never be. Additionally, the RG353P includes top shoulder buttons that are conveniently positioned for easy access during gameplay. These buttons are responsive and durable, and a great addition for those PSX games that run flawlessly (more on the games later). The overall comfort of the console is exceptional, as it fits snugly in your hands without causing any strain or discomfort, even during long gaming sessions. Whether you’re engaging in intense battles or embarking on epic adventures, the RG353P’s build quality ensures a sturdy and comfortable grip, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the gaming experience.

RG353P Emulator Compatability

Unless you have been living under a rock you know how these things work. Emulation being the talking point of course, each of these devices are essentially a cell phone back bone with Linux or Android running to give life to the consoles of yester year. The RG353P covers all the entry level consoles with everything from Atari to Super Nintendo flawlessly with the options to add scanlines or graphical improvements. Gameboy Advance, N64 through to PSX are smooth but may have the odd frame drop depending on your graphical improvements. Now the not so great. Dreamcast is probably the best I’ve seen on a budget handheld (by todays standards) game play for most games is smooth with the odd audio issue here an there. There are games that are just awful though and Saturn is in the same boat it can run but again not 100%. Don’t bother with GameCube and up it’s just not worth it.

Beyond its impressive game compatibility, the RG353P offers a range of customization options and features that enhance the overall gaming experience. The console’s user-friendly interface allows you to navigate through games and settings effortlessly. With its intuitive controls, you can easily configure buttons and save game progress, ensuring that you can pick up right where you left off.

One notable feature of the RG353P is its support for save states. Save states allow you to save your progress at any point in a game and resume from that exact spot later on. This feature comes in handy when you’re in the middle of a challenging level or need to take a break but don’t want to lose your progress.

Moreover, the RG353P offers the ability to customize display options and apply filters to enhance the visual experience. Utilizing RetroArch it really does make this console a wonder for retro heads like myself. You can choose from various aspect ratios, adjust screen brightness, and even add scanlines to replicate the look and feel of playing on a vintage CRT television.

Price & Overall Value

In conclusion, the Anbernic RG353P Handheld console is a daily driver for me a device that caters to the needs of retro gaming enthusiasts. Its design alone sold me, but its compatibility with a wide range of gaming systems, and extensive library of games make it a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a portable retro gaming experience.

But in being transparent its not perfect but none of these consoles are. With its affordable price tag, the RG353P stands out as one of the best options on the market for those looking to relive the magic of classic gaming without breaking the bank.

So, whether you’re a long-time fan of retro gaming or a newcomer eager to explore gaming’s roots, the Anbernic RG353P Handheld console is sure to provide hours of entertainment and nostalgic bliss. Grab your favorite retro titles, power up the console, and prepare for a journey back in time to the golden age of gaming.
